for "the nation" issue, i wanted to examine the concept of "america" from all angles. we started out the issue with 5 2-page spreads featuring photos and poetry submitted by our readers, with another dozen photos with poetry in the middle of the issue.
i prepared a few months prior to the start of production of this issue, by soliciting reader poetry & photos from the website and in the magazine. we sorted through the submissions, narrowed it down to just 20 or so, and in many cases requested better photos. with a reader group such as xy's, who are sometimes not out to their folks, or have sporadic schedules, it was incredibly difficult to get ahold of them to get their photos or details on time.
in the end the layouts proved a brilliant way to start the issue.
