In my typographic pursuits, I took a Letterform Design course at the Art Center College of Design. Each week we'd quickly scrawl (using chalk, pens, charcoal pencils) lines of text in whichever typeface or typefaces styles we were discussing that week.

The final project involved assembling these in some attractive fashion, into a 6" x 6" (15cm x 15cm) square. I created a hard-bound book which had alternating tissue and stock sheets—the tissue overlays would add or subtract elements from the successive page.

I chose the lyrics to Depeche Mode's "Surrender" as my text.

This composite uses News Gothic—this is the song's chorus. Flipping through the book was very much about peeling off layers—the reader progresses through the song, the imagery and the emotive use of letterform, postive/negative space and text sizing.
